BRONX- A 30-year-old teacher from the Hudson Valley pleaded guilty to performing oral sex on a 14 year old boy at a public school in New York City, as reported by Daily Voice.com and The NY Post.
Dori Myers, a resident of Garnerville and married to a Rockland County Sheriff’s Deputy , taught social studies at The New School for Leadership and the Arts the in the Bronx. In January of this year, she was charged with committing a criminal sexual act in the second degree and endangering the welfare of a child.
Law enforcement was tipped off about the multiple incidents after the boy told a classmate, who then notified school officials, according to police.
The acts are said to have taken place in November at West 168th Street and Broadway in Washington Heights, according to the criminal complaint.
Myers, who was removed from having any contact with children pending resolution of the case, will now be fired from her position, according to the New York City Department of Education.
Prosecutors requested that Justice Michael Orbus sentence Myers to two years in prison and order that she surrender her New York state teaching certificate.
Meanwhile defense lawyer Andrew Stoll said Myers cited that Myers won’t be working for the NYC Department of Education anymore, but asked the judge to allow Myers to keep her license, according to a court transcript obtained by The Post.
“There is a possibility that she could teach adults now or in the future and we want to preserve that possibility,” Stoll said. “She still is a talented teacher and has those skills, and I don’t see any reason to destroy her ability to make a living and to contribute to society in a positive way.”
Instead, Orbus promised to give her 10 years’ probation.
As a result of her plea in Manhattan Supreme Court on Friday, Myers will get to keep her teaching certificate.
Myers, is the wife of a Rockland County sheriff’s deputy.
Orbus also noted, “I just want to make the record clear that Ms. Myers is aware that she must register as a sex offender.”
