SALT POINT – On Sunday, a benefit bike ride was held through the county to raise money for the children of Tim Veach, who was killed on Sept. 26 while riding his motorcycle on Route 55.
A preliminary police investigation indicates that a 2009 Mazda traveling westbound on Route 55 near Mandalay Drive crossed over the center traffic lines and hit Veach, who was driving a 1998 Kawasaki motorcycle heading east at the time of the accident.
Veach was pronounced dead at the scene.
The benefit ride began and ended at Copperfield’s Restaurant at 2571 Route 44 in Salt Point.
On Sept 26, Helen Connor, a friend of Veach, posted on Facebook: “Anyone of my motorcycle friends interested in doing a run for this man’s funeral expense and for his four boys that he left behind please inbox me; weather is still good we can do this.”
One hundred blue carnations were handed out at the location of the crash and placed by family members and friends. Fifty-eight double riders and 105 single riders participated.
Tom Veach, Tim’s brother, said, “He was a good family guy. He was all about his family. He liked to do what he liked to do.”
“Greatest loss of all are those that are left behind,” Connor added.
Veach is survived by his four children, Timothy Junior, 15, Anthony, 13, Gian, 11, and Damian, 5, all of Hyde Park; brothers Thomas (Terri) Veach, Poughkeepsie, Edmond (Anna) Veach, Lake City, Fla., as well as many cousins and friends, according to his obituary.
“I was honored to be a part of the day. Thank you to all who came and donated money. God bless the family,” said Stephanie Parise, who ran the registration table.
A total of $5,180 was raised from registrations with an additional $2,320 in donations.
A 50/50 also raised $680. Copperfield’s was the 50/50 winner, which then donated back the winnings.
Andrea McComb from Copperfield’s also donated a buffet service and drinks for the event.
More than $8,800 was raised during the bike ride, which will go to Veach’s children.
Donations to help support the children can be mailed directly to Tom Veach at 41 Kelsey Road, Poughkeepsie, 12601.
