POUGHKEEPSIE – A monthly event that has been described as a “movement” for the City of Poughkeepsie continues to bring an entire community together in an effort to increase awareness of the City, and showcase it as a thriving, safe, and attractive place to live and do business.
First Friday Poughkeepsie is a city-wide celebration held on the first Friday of every month from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Every First Friday of the month eateries and shops stay open late, pop-up shops line the streets and music fills the air. Downtown Poughkeepsie is brought to life through food, music and art and September’s first Friday will be no exception. The event on Friday, Sept. 1 is an ‘end of summer’ celebration featuring a pig roast, children’s activities, musical acts and headlining band, the Jukebox Junkies.
Performing on stage in Mural Square, the Jukebox Junkies are a high energy band that puts a unique twist on a vast array of music. They perform cover songs from the 60s to today and from every genre. The Poughkeepsie based band was formed 7 years ago and consist of Travis Schifko, guitar and lead vocals; Don Pottenburgh, bass guitar and vocals; and Jimi Young, drums and vocals. They have a large fan base in the Hudson Valley and are excited at the opportunity to give back through the First Friday Poughkeepsie event and other events they perform at.
Travis Schifko commented, “First Friday sounded like a wonderful idea and a great way to get the word out about our awesome town. We look forward to doing our part to shine some light on the area and on the local talent. There are so many wonderful artists, bands, and venues doing their part locally. It’s inspiring.”
The Jukebox Junkies will be joined by other performing artists such as DJ Smitty, Rachael Mari Hendricks, Angela & Chip from the band Fourthfret, and Myael Simpkins.
First Friday is being presented in partnership by Rhinebeck Bank, LCS Companies, and R.L. Baxter Building Corporation. Additional support has been provided by the Poughkeepsie Journal Media, and iHeart Media of the Hudson Valley (96.1 KISS FM).
Located in the heart of the mid-Hudson River valley, Poughkeepsie features a revitalized waterfront park, a bustling Metro-North train station, fabulous restaurants, and is only 90 minutes north of New York City. Poughkeepsie is fast becoming a favorite destination for weekend travelers, culinary connoisseurs, artists, and outdoor enthusiasts.
