UPDATE: 8/14/17: The victim of Saturday morning’s bike accident has been positively identified as Hilario Galvez, a 53 year-old male from New Milford, NJ, said police. He was riding with a group of friends when the accident occurred. No new additional information has been uncovered since.
STONY POINT – Stony Point Police are investigating a fatal bicycle accident occurred about 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning on Buckberg Road in Tomkins Cove.
According to police, a bicyclist, traveling northerly down a very steep portion of Buckberg Rd. approaching Mott Farm Rd, left the roadway and crashed in a wooded area.
Stony Point Police, Stony Point Ambulance and Rockland paramedics responded to the accident.
Police said the bicyclist succumbed to his injuries on the scene.
He was with a group of about eight riders each riding down the hill separately and at this time there is no reason to believe that any other bicyclist or vehicle was involved and nothing appears to be suspicious.
Speed, road terrain and condition and mechanical failure will be considered by detectives as well as an autopsy to be conducted by the Rockland ME office, said police.
Rockland Sheriff BCI also responded and is assisting with the investigation.
Police said the victim is a male in his 50s and not from Rockland County. They are withholding his identify pending family notification.
