MOUNT KISCO – CareMount Medical has announced it is one of the first healthcare providers in the state to offer 3D image-guided breast biopsies with a prone system.

The FDA-cleared procedure is performed on a prone breast biopsy table which allows patients to lie flat on their stomachs during the test, providing a better view and access to the breast tissue, as well as a much more comfortable experience.

CareMount Medical Radiologists use 3D imaging to locate and precisely target regions of interest for biopsy, including those that can be challenging to detect using conventional imaging techniques.

A 360° view allows access to challenging lesions without repositioning the patient. The new system increases patient comfort, improves accuracy, reduces compression time, reduces radiation dosage, and reduces overall procedure time.

Additionally, CareMount Medical has installed a software enhancement that enables the best identification of regions of abnormality on a breast MRI, with use of color mapping technology.

“Early detection is one of the most powerful defenses we have against cancer,” said Scott D. Hayworth, M.D., CareMount Medical President and CEO. “CareMount’s mission is to provide state-of-the-art care, close to home–and our new biopsy system is a transformative technology that affords a great therapeutic advantage to our patients.”

“This 3-Dimensional biopsy table provides a more accurate means to identify, and biopsy small breast nodules, and calcifications,” explained Marc Hertz, M.D., Chair of Radiology at CareMount Medical. “By using a multi-dimensional approach, the biopsy procedure is carried out faster, more accurately, and with less samples required to obtain a diagnostic biopsy result. The enhanced speed of this system, and improved visualization of small masses and calcifications, enables the supervising radiologist, or surgeon, to utilize a lower dose of radiation to the patient.”
