TOWN OF ULSTER–A Kerhonkson woman has been charged with criminally negligent homicide in connection with the death of a 17-year-old girl, who was struck by a car near Spring Lake Drive on June 22, authorities said.
Accompanied by her attorney, Carol Melamed, 69, surrendered to detectives at the Ulster County Law Enforcement Center on Aug. 11, where she was arrested and charged with the felony, according to the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office.
Melamed was driving a 2007 Infiniti sedan south on Lucas Avenue Extension when she allegedly struck and killed Jennifer Curry of Kingston, who was walking north. The teen was transported to HealthAlliance’s Broadway campus, where she died.
The sheriff’s office said their investigation revealed that Melamed had been driving on the shoulder of the roadway. This and “other factors” contributed to the incident, they said.
Melamed was arraigned in Kingston City Court on Friday and released on her own recognizance.
