MIDDLETOWN – Encore, the SUNY Orange program for senior learners in the Hudson Valley, announces 22 available classes that will be offered this Fall, covering such topics as history, literature, outdoor activities, crafts, movies and fitness.
Registration for courses is now being accepted, with classes running in September, October and November.
Encore, a lifelong learning program established for residents ages 50 and older at SUNY Orange, supports high-interest courses, most of which are generally short-run offerings (comprised of one to four class meetings) and held on the College’s Middletown campus.
Classes are taught by topical experts who have a professional background in the subject or have spent many years studying and/or teaching the topic. They are professors and professors emeriti, lawyers, businessmen, artists, musicians, bridge masters, and specialists in the various modes of spiritual and physical well-being. Class sizes are determined by available facilities, course content (lecture/hands-on) and effective learning strategy requirements.
Courses planned for the Fall include: “Mah Jongg,” “Introduction and Beginning Bridge,” “Hypnosis,” “The Essence of T’ai Chi,” “The Life of Sir Wm. Johnson,” “Got Sleep,” “Economic Theories of the Business Cycle and How They Attempt to Explain the Great Recession,” “Intro to Kabbalah—Jewish Mysticism and/or Hasidic Judaism,” “The Desmond-Fish Legacy Project,” “Beginning and Intermediate Color Pencil Drawing,” “The Birds of Home: Birds in New York State,” “The End of America’s Involvement in Vietnam,” “Layman’s Guide to Near Death Experience,” “The Spanish Civil War,” “Art and Discussion of Style,” “Beginning/Continuing Yoga,” “Bridge: Supervised Bridge at Intermediate Level,” “The Beatles Next: The Solo Years and the Sixties: The British Invasion,” “Films for Everyone,” “Middletown State Hospital: A Discussion,” “More Hands-On Chinese Culture and Arts,” and “Aquasize.”
Encore also occasionally sponsors travel-learn trips to regional sites of interest for members.
This Fall, Encore is hosting a Sept. 12 tour of Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in Middletown.
Membership in Encore is required in order to register for the upcoming courses, and membership must be paid for registration for classes will be accepted. Membership dues are $45 per year and Encore has openings available for Fall 2017.
