POUGHKEEPSIE & MONTGOMERY – This summer, as many enjoy beautiful weather and vacation, others in the area are struggling to meet basic needs. United Way of the Dutchess-Orange Region wants to make sure children in the community can enter the school year prepared to learn.
To do this, United Way is sponsoring a school supply drive to collect new supplies to fill backpacks for area students for the upcoming school year. The goal is to help fill 1800 backpacks with school supplies for students-in-need in Dutchess and Orange Counties. This year, donated supplies will be distributed to students at backpack giveaways in Newburgh and Poughkeepsie.
The 10th annual Backpacks, Supplies & More will be held on Aug 19 from 10 a.m. to noon at Christ Episcopal Church, located at 20 Carroll Street in Poughkeepsie. The family-centered event also will feature food and refreshments, a bounce house, face painting, a fire engine, and vendors with educational information.
We Are Newburgh, a local group aiming to empower the city’s youth, is hosting a backpack giveaway on Aug 27 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Downing Park. Last year, We Are Newburgh distributed 3,300 backpacks to students. Students and families are invited to attend and enjoy free live entertainment, food and pick up needed school supplies.
The supplies needed for these organizations to fill the backpacks for students-in-need include:
- 1800 Black & White Composition Notebooks
- 1800 Glue Sticks
- 600 Spiral Notebooks
- 600 of Pocket Folders
- 600 Binders
- 600 Rulers
- 600 Crayon Packs
