POUGHKEEPSIE – Marlboro’s sophomore pitcher, Mel Papuli threw a no hit, no run gem to lead the Iron Dukes to a 4-0 road win over Spackenkill on Thursday. In fact, Papuli had such control with her breaking ball and screwball that she only walked one batter while striking out 10. “I wasn’t really happy with the slow start I got, but my curve, change up and screw were working well for me”, said Papuli.

Marlboro scored all of its runs in the 5th inning. Kaitlyn Tudico broke the ice with a single to right that scored Alysia Kelley from second. Ashley Vacca scored on a wild pitch, and Gabrielle Nelson followed with a triple to the fence in right center that scored Tudico. Nelson scored during a run down play between first and second.

“I thought defensively we played very well, and Mel pitched a great game”, said Marlboro head coach Ryan Naccarato.

The Spartans are carrying a young roster with only one senior and looking forward to building for next season. “Our starting pitcher is only a 9th grader (Rachel Wilsey) and we graduate one senior so I told the girls, ‘This is our team’, so its open gym and workouts.”, said Coach Abrams.

This was the final regular season game for the defending Class B state champs. The sectionals begin next week for Section 9 softball.
