STONE RIDGE – The High Meadow School, an independent progressive school for grades pre-K through 8th, announced it has appointed Susan Paynter as Interim Head of School for the 2017-18 school year.
Paynter will succeed Michelle Hughes, High Meadow’s current Head of School, who has accepted a position as the Director of the Lower and Middle School with The Albany Academy for Girls. Hughes has been with High Meadow for 16 years, the past seven in her current position, and has been instrumental in developing High Meadow into one of the most respected independent schools in the Hudson Valley. Paynter will oversee the school for the 2017-2018 school year. A permanent Head of School will be hired for the 2018-2019 school year, the search for which has begun.
Paynter has had a successful, 30-year career in children’s education. Her past work includes serving as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction for Kinnelon Schools in NJ, the founding of Unity Charter School in Morristown, N.J., Director of Gifted Programs at Montclair State University, and Adjunct Professor for William Paterson University’s Masters in Leadership Program. Paynter’s book Unchartered Waters was published by the Center for Innovative Education.
“It’s often said that change is hard,” said Stephanie Ellis, Chair of High Meadow’s Board of Trustees. “We are fortunate that Susan, with her deep understanding of children’s education issues, will lead our staff as they nurture the children through the upcoming year. New leadership brings with it new ideas and directions so, we are looking forward to the future of High Meadow.”
