BOSTON, Massachusetts – The Marist softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Boston University on Wednesday. The Red Foxes won the first game by a score of 5-3, and earned an 8-2 triumph in game two.
Senior Janna Korak led the Red Foxes on the day by going 6-for-7 with four RBIs, three doubles, and two runs scored. Korak came to the Red Foxes from Huntsville, Alabama.
Game One – Marist 5, Boston University 3
Marist scored the game’s first four runs in the top of the third. After junior Miranda Perez scored the game’s first run on an error, junior Gabrielle Kelliher launched a three-run homer to give the Red Foxes a 4-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Red Foxes added a run. Senior Rebecca Freeman started a one-out rally with a base hit – the 200th of her career. Freeman then scored on a sacrifice fly by junior Kourtney Paul. The Terriers battled back with one run in the sixth. In the seventh, Boston University scored twice and had the potential winning run on first base, but a lineout ended the game.
Sophomore Kallen Leeseberg (4-5) allowed just one run in 5.1 innings for the win. She gave up just four hits and one walk, and struck out two. Kali Magane (8-10) pitched a complete game and struck out eight for the Terriers, who received two hits from Emma Wong.
Game Two – Marist 8, Boston University 2
Marist scored in its first at-bat as Freeman’s two-out double brought home Korak. Boston University then took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. The score remained 2-1 in favor of the Terriers until the top of the fifth, when Korak’s two-out, two-run double gave the Red Foxes the lead for good.
Marist then broke the game open with a five-run sixth. A two-run double by sophomore Madison Lee scored both sophomore Brandi Coon and junior Brittany Colombo. A two-out infield single by Perez scored freshman Ali Milam. Korak followed with a two-run double, which scored both Lee and Perez, and closed out the scoring.
Korak paced the Red Foxes by going 4-for-4 with four RBIs and two doubles. In the circle, sophomore Megan Beiermeister (8-3) allowed just three hits over five innings, and struck out three, to earn the win. Senior Jayne Oberdorf finished the game with two scoreless and hitless innings.
Makinna Akers (6-8), who went the first six innings, took the loss for Boston University. Jilee Schanda went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Terriers.
Marist is now 23-16 overall; Boston University is 14-22. The Red Foxes return to action this weekend with a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheaders at Saint Peter’s (Saturday) and Manhattan (Sunday). First pitch of game one both days is scheduled for noon.
