MILLERTON–A 44-year-old paraglider died on Tuesday afternoon near Brace Mountain in Dutchess County when he encountered turbulence and fell into a heavily wooded area, according to authorities.
Varick Stringham of Claverack was pronounced dead at the scene, said Randy Simons, the spokesman for the New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
The incident happened at 1:35 p.m. and brought out multiple agencies to assist in the search and rescue, including state park police, the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, Northeast Fire Department, state police, Lakeville Hose Company and state forest rangers.
Brace Mountain, which straddles New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts, is the peak of a ridge in the southern Taconic Mountains. It is a popular flying destination for hang-gliders and paragliders.
