POUGHKEEPSIE– The Marist softball team split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader with Fairfield at Gartland Field on Saturday. The Red Foxes won the first game, 4-1, but the Stags took the second game by the same score.
Game One – Marist 4, Fairfield 1
Although Fairfield took the early lead when Tori Reed’s single brought home Amanda Ulzheimer in the first, Kelliher tied it up with a homer to left field in the second. The next inning, senior Janna Korak’s three-run homer to left-center field gave the Red Foxes the lead for good and closed out the scoring. Korak notched her 100th career RBI on the homer.
Senior Jayne Oberdorf (3-2) held Fairfield to one run in five innings. Oberdorf gave up just four hits, did not walk any, and struck out three. Red-shirt senior Jessica Van Alphen took over in the top of the sixth, and pitched two scoreless innings for her second save.
Destinee Pallotto (6-7) pitched a complete game for Fairfield and struck out five.
Game Two – Fairfield 4, Marist 1
Fairfield got on the scoreboard first with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third on a two-run double by Courtney Hankins. In the bottom of the inning, Marist cut its deficit in half when Korak’s RBI double brought home sophomore Casey Page.
In the fourth, a sacrifice fly Rachel Sieber expanded Fairfield’s lead to 3-1, but Korak threw out a runner at the plate in the same inning the preserve the Red Foxes’ deficit at two. In the top of the sixth, Angelina McGuire’s homered just inside the right-field foul pole, extending the Stags’ lead to 4-1.
Marist loaded the bases with none out in the seventh. However, Fairfield’s Karisa Hughen induced a double play on a lineout and a fly out to end the game. Hughen (6-9) pitched a complete game and struck out two.
Sophomore Megan Beiermeister (6-3) started and went four-plus innings, allowing just one earned run. Sophomore Kallen Leeseberg struck out four in three innings of relief. The Red Foxes totaled eight hits, with Kelliher, junior Miranda Perez, and sophomore Brandi Coon having two apiece.
Marist is now 19-12 overall and 2-2 in the MAAC; Fairfield is 13-18 overall and 2-2 in the MAAC.
The Red Foxes return to Gartland Field on Sunday, and will face Iona in another Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for noon.
