PORT JERVIS – Members of the Port Jervis Police Department arrested James Ribeiro, age 22, of Sparrowbush, and charged him with multiple offenses after an investigation into a stolen handgun on December 11, 2016. The investigation was assisted by the Town of Deerpark Police Department.
Police allege Ribeiro illegally possessed a stolen handgun and charged him with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree, a class C felony; Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a class D felony; and Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree, a class E felony.
Ribeiro was also charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fifth Degree, a class A misdemeanor, based upon an allegation that Ribeiro possessed other property which had been reported as stolen.
He was also charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, a class A misdemeanor, after police recovered a quantity of Alprazolam, a controlled substance, on his person. According to police, Ribeiro did not have a prescription for the Alprazolam.
Ribeiro was arraigned in Port Jervis City Court by the Honorable Matthew D. Witherow, City Court Judge. He was remanded to the custody of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on $50,000 cash bail, $100,000 bond alternative.
