POUGHKEEPSIE – The 2nd Annual Walkway Marathon is now in the books and it was not only a record turnout, but a gorgeous day for a road race series. The weekend event kicked off Saturday with the Think Differently Dash in the City of Poughkeepsie, and finished up early this morning with a Full Marathon, Half Marathon, and a 5K. There was also a Wheelchair race that was won by Peter Gagliardo with a time of 2:23:35.
All eyes were on the full marathon and Ukrainian Olympic athlete Sergii Vashurin. Vashurin had just won the Saskatchewan Marathon in Canada two weeks earlier with a time of just over 2 hours and 31 minutes. Last year’s Walkway marathon first place finisher finished about 20 minutes beyond Sergii’s time so most thought he would shatter the record, however, Mark Rabasco took over Vashurin in the later stages of the race taking advantage of Vashurin’s leg cramps.
“It was probably a little harder for me coming back to race so quickly after the race in Canada”, Vashurin said through his interpreter. “My strategy was just to finish once I started cramping.”
Rabasco was surprised he was the overall winner.
